JUBA - South Sudan boxing team will on December 5th travel to Kampala, Uganda to represent the African youngest country in an intercontinental boxing match that will kick off on the 9th of next month. The competition attracted participants from Tanzania, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and of course Uganda the host nation. The participants who are going to represent South Sudan are James kuol, Ezhail Diew, and Puro Okello Obob the head of coaches. Okello Obob said it is the first of its kind in the history of South Sudan to participate in such a major important sporting event. “It is like a genesis record for us to take part in such a competition for the very first time, however, I believe in my young men and I know that they have the potential to compete in boxing, if we do not win, and come back with medals, there is always another chance”. He commended. There are lot of challenges ahead of the country’s sport activities, however getting involved in the competition is a clear ink to put our map in the world. The head of South Sudan boxing team is lobbing for transport and accommodations support both from the ministry of sport, sport funs and non-governmental organizations operating in South Sudan. He said despite the high moral of the youth in supporting their boxing team, the Government support could be described as next to nothing towards the team’s activities; it is just promises that were made with no substantial action taken. Obob said he was using his own boxing equipments which he brought from the United States of America for the club to be used on voluntary basis. The future of the sporting activities in South Sudan would be bright if the government invested in it; the youth are quite capable to bring silver medals in the near future but they do need to be well managed. South Sudan is organizing to host a boxing match competition in early January next year. The history of South Sudan in sport is well noted especially in athletic, volleyball, and basket ball, following the independence on the 9th of July, the Government is hence working very hard to restore the country’s sport dignity. Okello called on the Government especially the ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to provide technical, moral and financial support to the national sporting team. Meanwhile, he encouraged young men and women of talents to take sporting activities very seriously so as to lift up the name of the newest nation.
