JUBA – As musical industry is growing both in quality and size, southern artists waste no time to demand for their representation within South Sudan and across the borders in their activities.
Yusto Maika musician of Dismajos band said yesterday that the process to formulate artist Union in the country is on the way.
“We need to form our union so as to have a committee that will represent and protect our activities,” he said.
Dismajos band was formed in 1984 and it is named after the founder members and today it is the biggest musical company in South Sudan composed of more than twenty members.
He said the Government should stand behind them by putting in place laws that protect their industry as it is done in other countries.
“We are now a Nation so bills for music industry should be formulated to guide it,”Maika said.
He said musical industry in the region was not supported in the old united Sudan but time has come for them to be recognized after independence of the South.
Speaking to the press, Nowel Charles a band member said musicians should engage in producing songs that can foster unity among the youth and promote national identity of South Sudanese culture.
He said during the liberation struggle till the recently concluded referendum, artists contributed positively by passing liberation messages to the people thus he urged his fellow musicians to work toward promotion of unity and fight against corruption.
“Corruption is a cancer as President Kiir put it in his independence speech so we need to fight it as it is our next target as whole,” he said.
Nowel stated that financial and moral support from the masses is the major challenges to them that need to be addressed by the Government and entire people of South Sudan.
According to him most people prepare to enjoy foreign music because some of the Southern artists are not serious.
He called on fellow artists to foster good discipline to the people in order to win popularity and compete favorably with other Nations.
He said through unity, cooperation and good discipline of the artists, southern musical culture can be raised to international standard.
He congratulated the government and the entire people of the new nation for positive spirit of promoting local musical industry and saying that together we can build a strong family.
